The Revere Golf Team got a Friday Night Lights experience as the annual Revere Golf Cup allows students to enjoy a new tradition.
Entering its fourth year, the Revere Golf Cup aims to bring attention to a sport that often receives less spotlight than other fall sports, such as football and soccer. Dan Archer, head coach of the Revere men’s Golf Team and creator of the Revere Golf Cup, aims to change that.
“I created this event because my parents never got to see me golf, and it wasn’t that they didn’t want to. But giving the kids this event gives them an exceptional experience.” Archer said.
When looking to the future of the event Archer said, “I wanted this to be something that these kids will never forget.”
Archer notes a major change from previous events.
“[In the] first year it was around, it was Copley Boys vs our guys, in the second year we got the girls involved,” Archer said.
The event has grown in the community, Archer has noticed how the Cup has become a cherished event and went on to reflect on the legacy of the event.
“We get a few hundred people, and it’s just a cool experience. For us not to have this once a year, I mean, it’s extraordinary,” Archer said.
The Revere Cup brings together athletes from all levels and creates a unique event that people look forward to. As Women’s Golf captain, Saumya Mahajan, who has taken a step up in this event regarding her leadership of the team, explained.
“What the Revere Cup does, is a way to get everyone together, the girls and the guys, the varsity and the JV, and it’s a way for everyone to play together,” Mahajan said
In addition to the crowd, the event also allows every player a moment to stand out as Men’s Golf Captain Jack Kinder, who has taken part in the golf team through his time at Revere, and taken a leadership role in growing the Revere Golf program as a whole.
“Everybody gets to have their time to shine and have that tee shot, and hopefully it keeps growing as the program expands,” Kinder said.
Reflecting on the growing recognition the team hopes to achieve, Kinder said that the cup provides a new type of experience for the team.
“It’s just an easy way to get our names out there as the Revere Golf Team if that many people come out,” Kinder said,
Most teams share a certain closeness, but the strength of the relationships is something even Archer has noticed.
“The guys are all great friends. Almost every night, I hear about them going over to one guy’s house, getting pizza, and watching a movie. Sometimes I have to tell them they’re spending too much time together,” Archer said.
In creating this event Archer has taken a step toward making the golf world in Northeast Ohio a more accessible and special community.
