When hiring an intervention specialist, schools prioritize strong educational qualifications and a passion for helping students. They look for individuals who can adapt to the unique needs of each student.
One such intervention specialist is Melody McDonald. Her typical day involves group and individual instruction, focusing on math and science. She collaborates closely with classroom aides and other school staff to ensure a comprehensive approach to student learning.
“I work with four classroom aides,” McDonald said. “They work with the students, and we also collaborate with speech therapy, occupational therapy and physical therapy. We’re working together a lot since they’re working with our kids a lot to.”
For McDonald, the most rewarding aspect of her job is witnessing the progress students make. “When you see them learn a new skill, it’s like a light bulb goes off,” she said. “ It’s gratifying.”
Beyond academic achievement, intervention specialists can also have a positive impact on students’ overall well-being. By building relationships with students and providing support, they can help improve students’ self-esteem, motivation, and resilience.
Another intervention specialist, Chelsea Morrsion, emphasized the importance of key qualities for success in this role. “Patience, empathy, and communication skills are essential,” she said. “Being able to provide clear and supportive guidance is key.”
Students also appreciate the support of intervention specialists. One student, Ellie York, said, “I think they are helpful. I’ve seen how they work one-on-one with students who need extra help.”
While the work of intervention specialists is valuable, they often face significant challenges. These include limited resources, large class sizes, and the increasing complexity of student needs. Additionally, intervention specialists may encounter resistance from struggling students and may not be receptive to their support.
