A Revere High School (RHS) senior is hosting a fundraiser in collaboration with Project Love to benefit One of a Kind Pet Rescue to celebrate National Pet Month.
Katie Kunkel created a fundraiser to benefit the pet shelter and bring in much needed products and money. Project Love’s mission is to provide kindness to students at RHS, as well as in the community. The club’s president, Lucas Timpone, shared that Senior Katie Kunkel came to him to suggest the idea.
“Katie Kunkel suggested the fundraiser to me. She is not a member of Project Love, but she wanted to collaborate with me to organize a fundraiser for One of a Kind Pet Rescue,” Timpone said.
Kunkel wanted to do the fundraiser to give back and raise awareness for the One of a Kind Pet Rescue.
“In early March, I was looking at ways I could give back to my community before I started college. I learned that April 11 marked International Pet Day, and I felt compelled to organize a school fundraiser benefiting the organization,” Kunkel said.
Kunkel works at One of a Kind Pets, which helped her organize and start the fundraiser.
“I have been very closely connected with One of a Kind Pet Rescue, so I wanted to do something that would benefit them,” Kunkel said.
After Kunkel shared her idea with Timpone, he began planning and trying to spread the message to get people to donate.
“I basically got the ball rolling. I helped hang up the fliers, get permission to do it and made announcements for the morning crew to read,” Timpone said.
Tanya Jonda, executive director at One of a Kind Pet Rescue, explained that fundraisers like the one Project Love is holding benefit the animals at the shelter.
“I agreed to do the fundraiser because we are always so desperate for supplies and funds. I was extremely grateful when Katie reached out to me with the idea and offered to hold this at her school,” Jonda said
Jonda also explained that students and community members can donate anytime by coming to the shelter. Fundraisers can spread awareness, but the shelter is always in need of more supplies.
“The rescue is always in need of donations, both consumable and monetary. We spend about $260,000 each year just on extraordinary medical treatments at MedVet, West Park and Metro Animal Hospitals. This is over and above what our veterinarians at our clinic can perform each day,” Jonda said.
Students can donate items such as towels, cat carriers, Dawn dish soap and laundry soap to Mrs. Sanders room, room A222. Parents and students can also directly donate money using the QR codes on the fliers.
“There are fliers all around the school with a list of items on them, or they [RHS students] or their families can scan the QR code on the flier if they would rather directly donate money. Listen to the morning announcements for reminders about this fundraiser,” Timpone said.
The fundraiser ran from April 3 to 19 and successfully raised items and money for One of a Kind Pet Rescue.
