High school implements new CCP classes

Revere High School plans to offer University of Akron College Credit Plus courses taught by Revere faculty on campus for the 2017-2018 school year.

College credit plus (CCP) includes courses taken by students for both high school and college credit. Previously the students would either have to take the courses online or on campus of the University of Akron to take the courses. According to the Ohio Department of Higher education website, CCP students that attend public or nonpublic schools who attend a public college are not required to pay for college course tuition, instructional tools, or supplies. The high school must provide instructional tools for the students. The post-secondary institution must waive fees and give supplement supplies according to the course syllabus. Revere High School principal Phil King described one of the reasons why Revere is offering in house courses next year.

“We felt it was important that our students remain in the building. This leaves a few more options for students because some students may want to take CCP but do not want to [travel to the University of Akron]. They do not want to spend all that time away from our building and still be part of our school,” King said.

To enroll into the CCP program, a student must apply to and be accepted by the University of Akron as a college student; they then have to fill out the proper papers. Revere High School guidance counselor Nick DePompei, explained some of the requirements. He also talked about what happens after a student sends in the required items.

“[Students] have to have an application on file, an ACT or SAT score and transcript sent to the university. The university will [then] go through [the items] and if accepted the student can take the courses,” DePompei said.

Revere will be offering three CCPs. Guidance counselor Mike Murphey named the courses and teachers.

“Two different English courses, Comp 1 and Comp 2 [will be taught], and a government and politics course as well. Mr. [Alan] Silvidi and Mr.[Jason] Milczewski will be teaching,” Murphey said.

The CCP courses will be on semester schedule, not Revere trimester schedule.
