Wrestling team welcomes scorekeepers
The Revere wrestling team student scorekeepers, often referred to as “mat stats,” serve as part of the team, gaining the opportunity to earn a Varsity letter at the season’s end.
This year, the mat stats consist of only girls, but the role is open to boys who are interested as well. There is no formal process for being a mat stat, so interested students must volunteer.
Head coach of the wrestling team and Revere High School math teacher Dan Mosher explained the responsibilities of the mat stats and how they ease his job as a coach.
“The primary responsibility [of the mat stat team] is to keep score of all the individual matches at tournaments and competitions. They also keep score of our wrestle-off matches that determine which wrestlers are Varsity. . . . [and] keep track of the points scored and [the] win-loss records of each individual wrestler, which saves me a lot of time. It also allows me and the rest of our coaching staff to focus on coaching our wrestlers during matches instead of having to record the stats ourselves,” Mosher said.
Freshman mat stat Aliya Berresford joined the team this year and explained her motives for pursuing this new opportunity in high school.
“I had prior knowledge of wrestling, so I thought it would be fun to branch out of my comfort zone and try to do something with it,” Berresford said.
Senior mat stat Peytyn Eiesland has been a part of the team for two years now, and she voiced what she deems the most difficult part of her responsibilities as a mat stat.
“Paying attention and getting all the stats for every match, [and] waking up at 6 am every Saturday morning [to attend matches can be difficult],” Eiesland said.
Berresford elaborated on what she looks forward to as the season continues and in future seasons.
“[I am] really looking forward to how the tournaments continue throughout the year. I do plan to continue in the stat team because I think it would be really interesting to letter in it,” Berresford said.
The 2016-2017 mat stat team includes freshmen Berresford and Victoria Hamel, juniors Elisabeth Kelly and Jessie Spann and senior Eiesland.
