Baseball team acquires new coaches for 2017

Revere High School’s baseball program has acquired new coaches to fill in the open positions that have come up for the 2017 season.

Revere Middle School science teacher Jason Cottrell is the head coach of the baseball team at the high school.

Cottrell explained why the coaching vacancies have happened within the program.

“Coach Dennison was accepted into the Physical Therapy school at Ohio State and would not be able to be here full time. He continues to work with some of our players individually when he [comes] back in town and also still provides lessons for our youth teams. Coach Vazquez decided to go into video game development and accepted a spot in the program at Full Sail University in Florida. So with their lives and careers changing directions, I had two spots to fill,” Cottrell said.

John Dariao is the new freshman coach for the team. Dariao played varsity baseball in high school and played in the state championship game. After high school, Dariao played for University of Akron’s baseball team until he suffered an injury that did not allow him to keep playing. Dariao shared what he wants to bring to the team.

“Anything that I can do to help constantly improve the team I will, [and be] a coach who cares about his players, loves baseball, and wants to improve the team,” Dariao said.

Neal Edwards is the new Junior Varsity baseball coach. Edwards played varsity baseball in high school. Edwards also played three years of college baseball at Walsh University with fellow coach Stephen Wido. Edwards shared what his goals are in his new coaching position.

“My goals for the team are to compete and have the players be better athletes and people. I want to get as many of the Junior Varsity players as I can onto the varsity team and, of course, win games,” Edwards said.

Cottrell explained what he thinks the new coaches will be able to help with the team.

“As with any and all teams, we want to come together as a team, work hard, and compete every game. They will be vital parts in helping our program to continue the momentum that we were able to get started at the end of last season,” Cottrell said.

The coaches have been running off-season workouts in order to prepare the teams for the season, which starts in March.
