Sophomore swimmer achieves success at state tournament
A Revere High School sophomore competed in the state swimming competition, breaking a school record and improving his personal records.
Alec Johnson went to C.T. Branin Natatorium at McKinley High School in Canton, Ohio, for a preliminary meet on February 25. He made finals the next day. Johnson competed in the 50 yard freestyle and the 100 yard freestyle. Head swim coach Deanne Pastva said that Johnson placed tenth in the 50 yard freestyle at the preliminary meet, and thirteenth in the 100 yard freestyle.
Pastva talked about the competition Johnson faced in his division.
“The top twenty-four from all of Division II in the whole state of Ohio qualify for the state meet. At the preliminary meet, he competed against twenty-three other swimmers. At finals, he competed against fifteen other swimmers,” Pastva said.
Johnson described how he felt after the meet.
“I felt really accomplished. [The State meet] was one of my biggest goals this year, and I hit it. My two goals were breaking a school record and going to states,” Johnson said.
Johnson broke previous student Jon Davis’ 50 yard freestyle record at the meet. Jon Davis had set the record at a district meet in 2012 and he graduated in 2013. Pastva mentioned Johnson’s other accomplishments.
“Johnson broke both personal and school records. He broke his personal record and the school record in the 50 yard Freestyle with a time of 21.80 seconds; the [previous] school record was 21.99. He broke his personal record in the 100 yard freestyle with a time of 48.15 seconds,” Pastva said.
Jeremy Bonafini, a fellow sophomore and teammate, described Johnson’s swimming style.
“He always puts one hundred and ten percent in and he will never stop for anything,” Bonafini said.
Johnson hopes to carry his success into next season as well.
