Kids4Kids encourages students to volunteer in community
The Kids4Kids program at Revere High School hopes to help children in the community and throughout the state.
Revere High School history teacher and Kids4Kids representative Phil Heyn voiced what Kids4Kids aims to accomplish.
“Kids4Kids is an organization where we get kids to try to do good things, volunteer, give donations and [get involved with] a variety of different activities. It is aimed at helping other kids in our region, state and outside the United States as well,” Heyn said.
Principal of Revere High School Phil King explained how Kids4Kids started at the high school.
“There were a couple of parents that started it [one of whom] is Debbie Higgins. They came up with an idea through the PTA that they wanted to do something for the greater good, and they thought to get kids involved and help other kids. They thought that it would be a positive thing to do,” King said.
Higgins, who helped bring Kids4Kids to the high school, mentioned why she works within the Kids4Kids program.
“I decided to get involved with Kids4Kids because I believe it is important to instill compassion and giving in students hearts. I like to volunteer where my children can see me making a difference in other people’s lives. I believe in leading by example, and I hope that my example, and ultimately the example set by Kid4Kids, will teach our children to be more compassionate to those in need, and that by giving of both their time and resources, they can can have a tremendously positive impact in the lives of others,” Higgins said.
Heyn added why he decided to get involved in the Kids4Kids program.
“[I decided to join Kids4Kids because] it’s been around at some of the other district buildings and we have not had anyone really representing Kids4Kids at the high school, so I got involved to try to promote the activities they do and the organization in general and about trying to start the club here,” Heyn said.
Heyn clarified how students at Revere can get involved in the Kids4Kids program.
“There are monthly events or focuses that they can get involved with, for example October was collecting candy that was extra or that people just didn’t like, or whatever the case may be. In the past it was used for The Ronald McDonald House of Akron, this year it was given to Rachel’s Challenge in the middle school for their cause. You could also sign up now, and it’s
something good to put on a resume and just good to help out,” Heyn said.
Kids4Kids is a brand new program at the high school, encouraging individuals to volunteer in local events. One can also help with cash donations.
