Summit Choral Society members discuss future
Revere students recently exited the Summit Choral Society due to other commitments and discussed their experiences as members of the touring choir.
As members of the Summit Choral Society, Senior Nick Jones and Juniors Madison Williams and Kelly Scheetz traveled across Europe and the continental United States honing their musical skills through various concerts. Jones discussed the founding of the Summit Choral Society.
“[The Society is a] 25 year-old organization that Doctor Frank Jacobs founded. The choir is an organization in which young people sing music in a professional environment with the mission to inspire a love of music. Jacobs’s wife, Arlene Jacobs, is the conductor of the touring choir,” Jones said.
Williams, a 5-year veteran of the choir, discussed her start in the choir.
“My family and friends really recommended it. I loved to sing and enjoyed the opportunity to meet new people,” Williams said.
Scheetz, a 6-year member of the choir talked about her involvement with the choir.
“The winter of my fifth grade year, a few members of the Summit Choral Society and the Jacobs came to my church to sing in a Christmas concert. They told me a lot about the group, and I immediately knew that I wanted to join,” Scheetz said.
Jones, who will begin his eleventh year with the choir this winter, discussed his participation in the choir.
“My mom signed me up in second grade, and I have loved it ever since. I love the Christian aspect of the Choir and found it very relatable,” Jones said.
Scheetz also discussed where she has traveled with the touring choir.
“I have gone on three tours. We traveled down the coast of California on my first. For the second tour we went to West Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee, North Carolina, and Georgia. My final tour was a European riverboat tour where we traveled to Germany, Austria, Hungary, Slovakia, and the Czech Republic,” Scheetz said.
Jones touched upon his role in the choir.
“I am a 2nd Alto. The section is mostly girls because at this age, most boys cannot sing this high,” Jones said.
Williams also discussed lessons that she has learned from her time in the choir that are applicable in her day to day life.
“I learned the value of friendship, how to treat people and teamwork,” Williams said.
Scheetz also talked about valuable lessons that she had learned from her time in the choir.
“This choir has taught me how much music can impact individual’s lives. I also learned the importance of friendship. I have made some of my best friends in the touring choir, and I believe that these friendships will last a lifetime because the power of music brought us together,” Scheetz said.
Williams revisited her favorite memory from her time at the Summit Choral Society.
“One of my favorite experiences was when [the choir] stood on the steps where Do Re Mi from the Sound of Music was performed and sang it live in Salzburg, Austria,” Williams said.
All three students agreed that the Summit Choral Society was an excellent way to meet new people, develop friendships and pursue their passion for music. Due to their other commitments, Williams and Scheetz are no longer a part of the choir, but Jones will continue to perform as a member of the touring choir. The choir’s next performance is this winter at Saint Bernard’s Church in Akron.
