RHS hosts annual Homecoming activities
Revere High School prepared to host its annual Homecoming events, including an outer-space-theme dance and the annual Homecoming football game.
Homecoming was organized by the RHS Student Council. Jenny Kirchner, school guidance counselor and Student Council adviser, worked to make sure the environment was safe and fun for all. This year, Student Council implemented a few new things that allowed students to have more influence in the dance’s planning. The voting had changed from previous years.
“Last year the student body voted on the theme, so every single student got the opportunity to vote on the theme,” Kirchner said.
Students had the option to remove their names from the Homecoming Court ballot. The representatives completed a volunteer project to pay back to the community.
The price of tickets increased to twenty dollars the Monday through Thursday before the dance, and to twenty-five dollars on Friday and at the door. Student Council decided to increase the prices in order to accommodate the purchase of more decorations.
The theme this year was outer space. Student Council had been working on design ideas and decorations all summer, due to the earlier date of the dance, which was dependent on when a home football game could be scheduled. Student Council President Caroline Edwards spoke of the decorations that were at the dance.
“This year we rented a laser, so there’s going to be lots of interesting lights. We have some rocks that are kind of like moon rocks, too. We also have lots of big, dark cloths with stars in them, and lights for stars. As far as colors and patterns and designs, we’re looking at a dark background with lights for the stars. Also, I think we’re planning on doing some planets [constructed] out of larger balloons. We’re going to paper maché and paint those,” Edwards said.
Edwards also described the new elements and features of the dance.
“We do have a photobooth again… We will have a more formal picture taking area other than the photo booth, also. We are renting a large chair that is shaped like the moon, so that’ll be a really cute place for people to take pictures with each other,” Edwards said.
Kirchner helped guide the students throughout the year on design decisions.
“They’ll have to go through a wormhole to get to (the dance), after you turn in your ticket,” Kirchner said.
The Homecoming game took place on September 18 against Highland, with the Minutemen falling 28-20 to the Hornets in a hard-fought game.
Before the dance and game, there was a spirit week at RHS to build enthusiasm and get ready for homecoming. Monday was Pajama Day, Tuesday was Camo Day, Wednesday was Dress for Success, Thursday was America Day, and Friday was Class Color Day.
Music was provided by Beach Boyz Entertainment. Student Council expected about 600 students to attend the dance.
