Women’s track obtains new coach, hopes to increase teamwork
The Revere girls’ track team has welcomed a new coach and is hoping to become more unified as a team through fundraisers and events.
RMS health teacher, Kory Rorabaugh is beginning her first year as the Varsity girls’ track coach. The team is currently 1-5 in the Suburban League with a win over Cloverleaf. The team also placed first out of ninteen teams in the Loudonville Invitational.
Natalie Lewis participates in shot put, discus and 100 meter hurdles. She explained how the team has changed since last year.
“We lost some strong seniors, but hopefully we can step up as a team and also gain some freshman who will do well. We also have a new coach this year, so time will tell if it helps us overall become better individually and as a team,” Lewis said.
Lewis explained that her personal goals include qualifying for regionals in discus; however, as a team, she hopes to qualify more people for events other than districts, such as regionals and states. Last year, four members of the team attended the state competition for the first time in years. Senior Julie Garcia, who participates in the 4×800, 300 hurdles and 4×400, expressed her team goals of beating most of the other Suburban League teams. Garcia expressed how track can be viewed both individually and as a team.
“Although majority of the events are based on individual performances, in the end the scoring is based on all the events together so each individual can determine how the team does,” Garcia said.
Lewis also commented on how track can be about individual performance as well as working as a team.
“Track is definitely individualized. Every event is focused on yourself, and you have no one to blame for doing poorly except yourself; however, your personal contribution relates to the team score . . . although you compete against yourself, you try to do the best you can in order to help the team in general,” Lewis said.
To work better as a team and to work with Rorabaugh, Garcia explained the team’s ideas for bonding with each other.
“We’re getting new warm-ups to help us become more unified as a team, and many new runners looking for a fun team sport. We are also starting to do a lot more fundraisers and events, such as a senior day and an official banquet,” Garcia said.
The teams next meet will take place on April 1 at Orange High School.
