Boys’ tennis team ready for successful season
The Revere men’s tennis team is looking to improve as a team and win the Suburban League title in its upcoming season.
The team consists of sixteen players this season. The team will play ten home matches throughout the season at the tennis courts next to the Revere administration building. Three Revere players qualified for districts last year, and the team hopes to build on this success this year.
Coach Paul Fisher, who will return for his sixth year with the team this year, spoke about two of last year’s district qualifiers who are returning this season.
“[Senior] Matt Harris and [junior] Bharat Kumar qualified in doubles and they are both returning this year. We’re hopeful that they can advance even further this year,” Fisher said.
The team had only two players graduate last year, leaving it with a strong line-up. The team also enjoys a good connection between the players. Harris described the chemistry on the team.
“Most of us have played together for two or three years now . . . . Everyone enjoys each other’s company both on and off the court,” Harris said.
Senior Griffen Hansen also commented on the team’s chemistry.
“It’s a lot of fun. [The team] is always pumped up by the craziness of Harris and myself,” Hansen said.
Many of the players have participated in their own off-season training; team practices will begin March 9th. Harris explained the team’s practice routine.
“Team practices include specific drills to work on all phases of our game, [including] volley, serve and groundstroke drills, along with conditioning,” Harris said.
The tennis team has players who compete in singles competitions as well as teams of two who play in doubles. Fisher described how he assigns these roles.
“Most guys will play exclusively singles or doubles throughout the year. Occasionally, we’ll move some things around, but at any given meet, they’re just going to play singles or doubles,” Fisher said.
The team has five seniors: Dominic Bucci, Griffen Hansen, Matt Harris, Jack Hershfield and Dominic Manning.
The team will play its first match on April 6th. The Varsity will play at Nordonia, while the Junior Varsity team will face Nordonia at home.
