Revere students create fashion club
Students at Revere High School have worked with the administration as well as the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising to start a new Fashion club.
Seniors Ben Lewis and Malorie Newingham worked with adviser Kathleen Shisler to start the new club, gaining funding from the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising (FIDM) located in Los Angeles, California. The club must meet a number of requirements as part FIDM’s program. The program will provide the club with a grant to help fund club activities and help them create a business plan.
Shisler explained the steps necessary to receive the grant from FIDM.
“We have to have a couple of [business] meetings a month. We have to have ten official members, and we have to have a president, vice president, secretary and treasurer and a couple of alternates. They actually have some stationary that we have to use if we’re doing any correspondence,” Shisler said.
According to Lewis, president of the club, it was not difficult to gain permission from the administration to start the new club. Lewis described the process of starting the new club.
“In order to start the club itself, I just had to speak to an administrator from the school, so it wasn’t too difficult. We’re trying to do it through [FIDM’s Fashion Club program] so we had to get ten people and we had to fill out all this paperwork to send to them so they would fund our club,” Lewis said.
The students in the club hope to host a variety of different activities throughout the year. Newingham listed a number of ideas for activities she has for the club.
“I’d like if we did little sewing projects, talked about trends, looked through magazines . . . or one thing I thought would be cool would be to go to a thrift store and make new outfits,” Newingham said.
Lewis shared some other ideas that the club is considering.
“We’re hoping to hold some kind of ‘dress for success’ week and towards the end of the year [host] some kind of show to display designs or trends,” Lewis said.
Shisler also spoke of her hope that the club would help students express themselves, sharing her goals for the new club.
“I really want to promote more fashion interest in more students that may want to choose that as a career,” Shisler said.
According to Shisler, Lewis and Newingham, the club will be diverse in activities and open to new ideas. Lewis explained more about the new club.
“We’re open to new ideas, we want more people to get involved . . . and they can get involved at any time and come as much or as little as they can,” Shisler said.
Interested students who have questions about the new club may speak to Shisler, Lewis or Newingham.
