RHS art teacher wins award
A Revere High School art teacher received the Outstanding District Educator Award after the PTA nominated him for his exceptional teaching abilities.
Robert Pierson, the AP Drawing and Design teacher, won the award after teaching and being very active in the PTA. Hope Weisburn of the PTA was in charge of nominating Pierson.
“Revere is filled with spectacular educators and it is wonderful that the PTA has decided to reinstate this award. Bob Pierson was the perfect choice,” Weisburn said.
The recipients of the award had to meet several specifications for the award: they had to be involved with their students, they had to take part in other student activities, and they had to be involved with and dedicated to the PTA.
Along with his application for the award, Pierson submitted his educational philosophy. He believes that teaching art is much more than showing his students how to make art.
“After 19 years of teaching I have found that good teaching is really about creating a positive environment, knowing your subject and serving as a role model,” Pierson said.
Along with Pierson, Bath Elementary teachers Linda Bare and Debra Turner and Revere Middle School teacher, Carol Shoop recieved the Outstanding District Educators for their individual schools. Shoop explained her beliefs as an educator.
“My belief is that I continue to be a life-long learner who helps to develop creative thinking and problem solving in my students who can also generalize their acquired knowledge and apply it in everyday decision making,” Shoop said.
Shoop has been teaching at Revere for 21 years. She believes that she is responsible to help her students in any way she sees possible.
“If it were not for the students, I am pretty sure I would not be willing to take on the time it takes to grade or coming in a t 6:30 in the morning. They are what make this job rich and filled with joy,” Shoop said.
The recipients of the awards will be honored at a luncheon took place May 19.
