Class council to hold 1920’s-themed Prom
After careful planning from the senior class council officers, this year’s 1920’s themed Prom will provide RHS seniors with an evening full of dancing, dinner and After-Prom activities.
Ling described how the decorations will incorporate the 1920’s theme.
“We are hanging lanterns all around the room and the DJ is going to do up lighting for us. We are also going to have centerpieces that are vases filled with beads that light up along with feathers and jewels,” Ling said.
Ann Dietz, a member of the After-Prom committee, noted that local restaurants and families donated a large variety of food for the event. She spoke of what students can win at After-Prom.
“Prizes range from gift cards, to items needed for college dorms, to iPods, iPads, TVs etc. You must be present in order to win a prize. They are won through raffles and from giving the right answers to questions [asked by] the MC,” Dietz said.
At After-Prom, students can go bowling and enter raffles while listening to music and enjoying the casino and cash machines. Dietz noted the importance of After-Prom.
“Students should attend as it is a safe way to end the evening having fun with your classmates along with [creating] memories to carry forward,” Dietz said.
At the end of last year, the officers toured different locations to pick a place to hold the dance, finally deciding upon The Tangier in Akron. Cynthia Gobrogge, RHS librarian and adviser of senior class council, described how this year’s dance will be different from those in the past.
“This year, aside from the dinner and dancing, there is going to be The Photo Zone. They can take pictures with their friends and date and take as many pictures at they want and then take the pictures home,” Gobrogge said.
Gobrogge explained why students should attend Prom.
“Prom is a rite of passage. It’s a time for seniors to get together one last time for an event that’s going to be fun and memorable. The class has been fundraising since freshman year and the officers have put in a lot of effort to make sure everyone has a good time,” Gobrogge said.
Senior class council President Joel Gerberich, Vice President Jackson Leventhal, Secretary Anna Ling, Treasurer Maggie Hill and other class council members began fundraising for Prom at the beginning of their freshman year. Ling described some of the events organized to raise money for Prom over the past four years.
“One of the fundraisers that we have done for the past 3 years is we partnered with Musketeer’s and had a pasta dinner. We asked people to come and perform music while we served food. We also sold Malley’s chocolates,” Ling said.
Tickets are available during lunch periods for fifty dollars. Prom will take place on May 17 at The Tangier. The dance starts at 7:00 PM, followed by the dinner at 7:45 PM and will end at 11:30 PM. After-Prom will be held at Riviera Lanes from 11:30 PM to 3:00 AM.
