Students search for scholarship opportunities
Seniors at RHS are looking for and applying for scholarships for the upcoming school year in order to earn money for the university or college of their choosing.
As the school year comes to a close, many students may visit the guidance office to see what kind of scholarships are available for them and what they can apply for. Guidance Counselor Linda Weigand is in charge of finding scholarships and keeping students posted on new scholarship opportunities. Weigand explained how a student can find a scholarship.
“We’re trying to make it as easy as possible…. Students can also look on our webpage, Revere High School [under] scholarship opportunities. I hope in time, you can go here and click and you can… apply right there,” Weigand said.
All of the scholarships that are listed on the website also have a number to the left of each scholarship organization. This number corresponds with the same number in the file cabinet of the guidance office. When a student finds out the number of the scholarship that he or she is applying for, then he or she can find that number in the file cabinet and pull out the application for that scholarship.
One of the more popular scholarships is the local scholarship. This scholarship gives nine opportunities of receiving a scholarship with just one application. One of the scholarships that is derived from the local scholarship application is from Jim Kraus from the Christiansen Foundation. The Christiansen Foundation scholarship offers $3,000 to a senior.
“[Jim Kraus] contacted me probably about 3 or 4 years ago and he wanted to do a scholarship and I felt that this was something that was already in place,” Weigand said.
Michelle Ellis is the Executive Director of the Office of Student Financial Aid at the University of Akron. At the University of Akron, in order to qualify for scholarships, a student needs to have at least a 3.0 GPA, and at least a score of 21 on the ACT.
“Since scholarships are based on the combination of GPA and ACT, they must have the minimums… to be eligible for scholarships. Some scholarships require essays as well, so good writing and critical thinking skills will also go a long way,” Ellis said.
While the deadlines of scholarships can vary, many of them end around mid-April because of the award ceremony for seniors.
“The awards assembly will be May 29… Some of the applications are collected in guidance [and] some of the applications are sent to the person that’s awarding [the scholarship] so they can review [the application],” Weigand said.
Students are encouraged to apply for scholarships and can find these opportunities in the guidance office or on the Revere website.
