International Club works with local charities
Revere High School’s International Club donated time and money towards local charities and food banks while continuing with their regular meetings.
Although the main focus of International Club is student led presentations, the organization also dedicates itself towards services that reach out to the nearby area. This year, the club spent time working with local charities and the Good Neighbors Food Bank in Akron. International Club adviser and government teacher Jason Milczewski commented on the importance of being involved with and donating to local charities.
“I think it is really important to find small local charities to work with. [It is] not that big ones are not important, but small ones do not have resources and personal reputations to get as much attention. And so many local people work so hard to keep these things afloat,” Milczewski said.
Senior Michael Kovacevich, who has spent time with the club during all four years of high school and has also been a board member this year, discussed the benefits of donating towards charities.
“I think it was pretty cool to give a couple dollars, knowing that it could go a long way and mean a lot to someone else,” Kovacevich said.
Although the club does spend time working with these local charities, their overall goal is to spread knowledge about different cultures. Nolan Dyko, a senior who has been a board member in the club for the past two years, spoke of the events of an International Club meeting.
“International Club presentations occur every other Tuesday in room 200 [where] we teach those who attend our meetings about various countries,” Dyko said.
Milczewski also explained the importance of the club’s meetings.
“It is a way to get students at Revere involved, learn about culture and even practice presentation skills,” Milczewski said.
The International Club has yet to announce its next fundraiser. Meetings occur every other Tuesday in room 200 and are open to all students.
