Senior starts AP Club, helps students prepare
A RHS senior established a new club that is designed to help students taking Advanced Placement (AP) classes study the curriculum and prepare for the AP tests.
Charles Li, founder of the AP Club, wants to focus mainly on AP European history, AP statistics, AP chemistry and honors chemistry courses. Eighteen students attended the AP Club’s first meeting on Tuesday, August 27 in the library after school. Li explained the goals of the group.
“Leadership, groups, tutoring [and] resources…provide the tools for our success,” Li said.
Coordinators for each course will be selected. They are responsible for holding meetings on their individual class to promote discussion and help fellow members. Sophomore Victoria Deng seeks helpful advice by participating in the study groups.
“Sharing information with people taking the same course can provide a thorough review,” Deng said.
Li said he will meet with coordinators once a month at a leadership meeting to “discuss achievements and issues” regarding the club and the coordinator’s progress with involved students.
Guidance counselors will have lists of qualified tutors if a student decides to seek extra help for a particular class. Li explained that members can also speak with a coordinator to set up a tutoring session.
“We will have our own tutoring system set up…for those who want more individualized help. Each coordinator will have a list of people within [their group] who want to tutor for that class,” Li said.
In addition to group discussions and tutoring, AP Club will collect practice tests and other AP resources. Junior Dominic Bucci strategizes to use the materials for reviewing.
“I plan to use the materials as guided reading…and also to practice for AP exam questions,” Bucci said.
AP Club is open to all students interested. Currently, Li’s Advanced Placement Club page on Facebook contains information on the club’s progression and future meetings.
