New math teacher doubles as volleyball coach
From a very young age, Jenna Steyer enjoyed school and saw the power in education. After realizing how much she loved the logic and problem solving skills math involves, she decided she wanted to be a math teacher. Steyer studied integrative mathematics and marketing at Miami University and admired the way her professors frequently incorporated technology and group work into their lessons.
This year Steyer joined Revere High School’s math department for her fourth year teaching to teach Algebra II and geometry. She previously taught at Woodridge High School and explained what attracted her to Revere.
“Revere has an excellent reputation and is a top school in Northeast Ohio. I have heard lots of positive things about Revere, the community, the staff and the students,” Steyer said.
As building principal, Phil King reviews applications for positions. He organizes applications to ensure that he checks out every application and schedules interviews. King shared what stood out in Steyer’s application.
“She had some very good credentials and some other things she could offer, so I thought it was important to give her an interview. After we did that we thought she was the best candidate for the position,” King said.
Steyer is also the new volleyball coach, having coached volleyball at Woodridge before coming to RHS. King talked about how Steyer’s volleyball experience at Woodridge strengthened her application and made her an ideal candidate.
“We wanted to get somebody that was involved in school life, so not a teacher that only taught math but someone that wanted to get involved…We [wanted to] select someone that does more than only come to school and teach from 7:30 to 2:40 and then leave. We wanted someone who would be involved in the school and student life. That was a great selling point and that kind of put her over the top,” King said.
Steyer has several volleyball team members in her math classes, one of which is sophomore Meredith Zendlo. Zendlo voiced the similarities between Steyer’s coaching and teaching styles.
“She does not hover over you. She gives you the information you need and lets you do it yourself. She helps you along the way as opposed to just giving information and then not helping. She kind of just helps you get to the goal that you need instead of just leaving you there,” Zendlo said.
Steyer enjoys teaching and coaching at Revere and described the experience as a “privilege.” She likes working with Revere’s staff and students and enjoys balancing being a volleyball coach and a math teacher.
