The International Student Exchange (ISE) program allows students to study abroad, immersing themselves in environments that enrich their global perspective. The program often pairs students with a host family in the area of the partnered educational institution, allowing both student and host to grow their personal relationships and understanding of international cultures.
ISE could not survive without host families, and due to this reliance, the program is eager to find qualified partners. Host families are expected to treat their students as family members, not guests, supporting and celebrating them throughout their stay. Other general requirements include a spare room or one that can be split with up to one other child and a welcoming, positive attitude.
Families receive no financial allotment for hosting, so potential applicants should be in stable economic conditions and ready to support another child’s room and board for an extended period. While there are no direct financial incentives, families do become eligible for a tax deduction for any host related expenses.
It is important to note that exchange students are insured under family or program-related insurance, and host families are not responsible for any medical expenses. Students must also pay for personal expenses, paying for school breakfast/lunch, hygiene items and school/activity fees.
Hosting an exchange student not only offers a student a unique look at a country’s culture but also a place in a family and an opportunity to build a lifelong relationship that neither student nor host will forget.
ISE is present in all 50 states, in over 7,800 schools, and among 29,000 host families. To join the ISE community, applicants can fill out a form on the programs website.
