Staff members have many ways of influencing the student body in Revere High School (RHS). One staff member has found a unique way to connect with the Revere community. Student Resource Officer Scott Dressler started a YouTube channel where he posts various content for people in the community.
On the Revere SRO YouTube channel Officer Dressler hosts a series titled “Just the Facts with SRO Dressler” where he covers various topics relevant to students and parents such as social media and vaping.
Dressler first heard the idea over a year ago while attending a community meeting. He was at first reluctant to the idea.
“One of the volunteers at the event said ‘You should start a YouTube channel to let people know what’s going on,’ and I didn’t want anything to do with that at first. I’m really not big on filming myself,” Dressler said.
He eventually decided to start recording and uploading videos to his channel titled Revere SRO and initially struggled with the task.
“The first one I was a little nervous. I don’t know why. . . . I shouldn’t be nervous about what people think of me,” Dressler said.
Dressler’s first video was about Safety Town, and currently has the most views of any videos of the channel. He details the specifics of Revere Safety Town, such as funding, volunteering and what the Safety Town does for the young kids who participate.
After his first couple of videos, Dressler went on to post a mini-series of videos that each feature staff from one of the four schools in the district.
“Last month we went to every building and talked to the principals and assistant principals for a whole month. That was really fun, to sit down and talk about their view on everything,” Dressler said.
One of the people featured on the channel is RHS associate principal Doug Faris, who has supported Dressler. Faris said he supports Dressler in return for the help that he provides.
“I love it . . . He came to us with the idea . . . It was a lot of fun,” Faris said.
Faris said the video was a fun and unique experience that he enjoyed. Faris is thankful for Dressler’s efforts in maintaining the safety of Revere students.
“I know he will continue to talk about safety, and it’s important . . . Anything he puts on there I always relay them to my own kids,” Faris said.
Faris also said that driver’s safety is a large topic he believes students should learn more about. Faris continued saying Dressler does great things for the school.
“Anything Dressler does I’ll get behind because it’s usually good . . . I could not do this job without this man,” Faris said.
Another supporter of the channel is At-Risk Coordinator Bonnie Simonelli, who influenced him to start the channel.
“We were talking about how cool it would be if he would do that,” Simonelli said.
Simonelli has been following and supporting Dressler’s journey since. She also said Dressler’s efforts to help the community expand beyond the videos seen online.
“Officer Dressler does more than we even know . . . he’s the best resource officer I’ve ever met,” Dressler said.
Dressler continues to upload weekly, covering several topics that focus on various topics relevant to members of the district.
“Every Friday there should be a new video there,” Dressler said.
Dressler’s weekly videos look to include different people of the community.
“I am open to having anybody at any time on the channel . . . I don’t want it to be all about me,” Dressler said.
Dressler plans to feature the counseling office in the future to cover mental health for students. Students, parents, faculty, and anyone else can tune in to “Just the Facts” on Revere SRO to be informed about ongoing topics in the community.
