Many people have commitment in their life, but one Revere student takes the word to a new level. This busy student jets from practices on the tennis court, to running clubs, and then to traveling globally to explore her interests. Now, she is on the journey of continuing her passions into her future.
Senior Kimmy Wong is enthusiastic about her interests. She morphs her interest into leadership skills that help her participate in and run several clubs and a sport.
One of Wong’s many passions is tennis. She has played the sport since the age of three. Originally, her tennis career began because her mother played in college, but Wong ended up loving the sport. She explained a few of her favorite aspects of it.
“You could play indoor and outdoor tennis, and it’s more of an independent sport,” Wong said.
Wong demonstrates her love for the sport through dedication. She commits hours of time and energy to playing tennis. Although the typical season does not start until later in the summer and into the fall, Wong practices frequently in the off-season with clinics. Wong described her practice schedule during the club season.
“Usually I would play three times a week, . . . I would do two clinics a week and a private lesson,” Wong said.
Wong’s teammates often notice her commitment. She plays for Revere’s tennis team during the season and enjoys the team. She received the title of captain last season after her teammates voted for her. One teammate, Diya Nuka, spoke of Wong’s attitude towards tennis and her volunteering to serve the community over the summer.
“She’s pretty committed to her sport, and I know that she loves tennis. We ran this tennis youth camp. She did that three days a week, . . . so I feel like that shows that she’s pretty committed [to] her sport,” Nuka said.
Wong hopes to continue her tennis career when she gets to college, but she is unsure of the exact path she will be taking. She spoke about how she has been weighing her options.
“I’m looking into colleges to play at. . . . I still haven’t decided where I want to go yet and whether or not it would be for tennis . . . if I don’t end up playing for the college team, then I would play club tennis,” Wong said.
Another one of Wong’s passions is traveling and exploring other cultures. This ultimately led her to joining Revere’s International club and becoming one of the club’s co-presidents. She described what led to this passion.
“I’m Chinese and my parents were immigrants, so I’ve just always taken interest in global and cultural clubs and ideas around the school,” Wong said.
Students meet every other Monday in adviser Jason Milczewski’s room for the International Club. The club has a goal of spreading information about the different cultures of other countries. Albito Lopez, board member of International club, described Wong’s involvement with the club.
“[Wong] definitely is constantly spreading news on what’s happening in the international club. . . . She’s at nearly every meeting,” Lopez said.
Another way Wong incorporates her love for other cultures into her life is through travel. She has seen many places worldwide, and she always appreciates the opportunity to learn new things about different countries.
“I like going to different countries. . . . It’s nice to broaden my scope and learn about different countries and other people’s cultures,” Wong said
Overall, Wong’s passions have helped her develop leadership skills and hobbies in several different contexts. She will continue to pursue these interests as she moves on to college. Lopez spoke on Wong’s future.
“I think she’ll be very well prepared for college. I mean, she’s taken really high level classes all of her high school career, which is especially not easy in senior year. I just think she’ll be very well prepared for college, not only socially, but definitely academically,” Lopez said.
As Wong heads off into the future, her passions continue to fuel her leadership and social skills.
