After the final bell of the day rings, most students rush out of the building as fast as they can, but senior Gianna Kosir pours into the auditorium for rehearsal. When she gets on the stage, she forgets the stress of the day and lights up the stage, showcasing a variety of different skills and emotions.
Throughout her life, senior Gianna Kosir performs in plays and musicals. During her time with Revere Players, she has taken part in five productions.
Kosir’s love of music and theater began with her mom. She explained that her mom loved taking her family to Playhouse Square, and her personality led her to join different productions.
“I’m a very dramatic and outgoing person. There were a couple opportunities at Bath Elementary, I was in Rumpelstiltskin, and I was in little productions, like Annie,” Kosir said.
Kosir explained that during her time performing at Revere, directors have utilized different ways of telling the same story. Kosir enjoys switching the direction of the play, even if others have performed the same play several times prior.
“[They have] the same script and the same lines, and people know how the story ends, but every production is different, and everyone tells the story in a different way,” Kosir said.
She explained that last year’s play, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, is well known due to the popularity of Shakespeare, so the directors wanted to create a new concept for it.
“We took an indie twist on it, and we told a completely different story. But the lines were the same,” Kosir said.
Not only does Kosir’s performance on the stage stand out, but her personality is even more ebullient. Her choir teacher, Sierra Pabon, described Kosir.
“She is such a light of a person, very bubbly, very charismatic, very kind and sweet and welcoming,” Pabon said.
Both Pabon and the Revere Players director, Sarah Pine, explained that in addition to her personality, it is evident that Kosir also takes choir and players very seriously.
“You can . . . tell that she’s very committed to her craft. She’s interested in learning more. She really wants to learn, she wants to learn new skills,” Pine said
Kosir’s personality and dedication led to her getting elected as choir president. Pabon explained the process of the choir election.
“[Candidates] had to give a speech in class to their peers just introducing themselves, what big things do [they] want to promote. Then, each officer candidate had to have an interview with me,” Pabon said.
After the interview with each of the candidates, Pabon explained that she sent out a Google form, which she took into consideration when deciding who would serve as president of the choir. Pabon also explained that the choir has different crews that have additional responsibilities. In addition to her presidency, Kosir takes part in two other crews, the fundraising crew and the collaborative culture crew.
Kosir also serves as a co-president of the Revere Players organization. Pine explained her responsibilities in this position.
“They help recruit if we need to do fundraising, assist our Revere Players parents with things like concessions, snacks, ticket taking, publicity,” Pine said.
This year, Kosir plays the lead, Abigail Williams, in the fall play, The Crucible. Kosir explained that she went into the audition expecting a different outcome.
“I didn’t even audition for Abigail. I auditioned for John Proctor’s wife. A lot of people need different lines read for their audition, so I read different parts, and they were able to see how I could portray different emotions very well,” Kosir said.
As she gains experience, Kosir said that her parts have gained importance. Her parts have gained more talking lines and portray more emotion as she performs in more productions.
“[During] freshman year I played an extra; sophomore year was Grease, I played an [extra]. And I didn’t step out of that character box until [A Midsummer Night’s Dream], because especially with theater, you have to learn how to tell a story without saying any lines before you could tell a story with lines,” she said.
Last year, Kosir served as a student director for the spring musical, Mamma Mia! Pine explained that when being a student director, Kosir had more administrative responsibilities.
“[She] takes attendance at rehearsals, helps me get out the call and make sure we have who we need to have at rehearsals each night. [She] may help set up and tear down the space for rehearsal,” Pine said.
Kosir has plans to continue her love for choir and theater as she moves on to college.
“It was something I didn’t think I was going to do, but these past few years, it’s just been rooted in my life that I cannot imagine my life without it,” She said.
The Crucible opens on November 16 where Kosir will portray the lead, Abigail Williams. Afterward, she plans to take part in the spring musical.
