Freshman wrestler plays in local band

As the school bell rings on December 19th, Lucas Weinert heads over to the wrestling room for practice. There he works hard with his teammates for the two hour duration. As practice concludes, most of the team prepares to head home and call it a night, but not Weinert.

Instead, Weinert embarked directly to Grace Church, where he would play the drums in their band. Throughout the show he could be seen on stage playing along with the other band members. Weinert even showed off his skillset in a drum solo. The show was a success.

Weinert began his career by playing along with his siblings Logan and Landon. The brothers before Lucas both chose guitar, so there was a wide open spot for a drummer, hence Lucas Weinert. Together, the brothers would have performances for the entire family as well as  friends. While his brothers were good, Lucas took his skillset more seriously. His parents would praise Lucas for his skills with the sticks.

Later, Weinert joined a church group and performed with fellow members. He always has drum solos and filler rolls mixed in with the rest of the performance, so he stood out among the others. Weinert continues to perform in the group to this day and loves what he does.

On top of being a musical performer, Weinert enjoys participating in school sports. He is a football player as well as a letter-winner in wrestling. During the spring, Weinert devotes himself to Revere’s weight training program to improve his body for both football and wrestling. Weinert talked about how he balances his hobby of drumming with other school activities.

“School is important to do well in, so it is important to find a balance between school, sports, drumming, and free time. I take a study hall which really helps to manage the workload of homework, but at home after my sporting events I will go home and do whatever school work I have and then go drum,” Weinert said.

When Weinert is not hitting the books, he is picking up the sticks. He started listening to a few bands, only focusing on the drummers. Most of these individuals have performed for many years, which sparked an idea for Weinert to pursue the field of drumming. Weinert shared how the drummers he listens to inspires him.

“Twenty One Pilots and bands like the Foo Fighters and Nirvana were always bands that I enjoyed listening to. I always drifted towards liking those drummers, but they were always just so good at playing the drums that it inspired me to get better at the drums myself,” Weinert said.

Drumming also shaped Weinert along the way. He credits the instrument for allowing him to make close friends and learning many life lessons. Weinert shared some of the lessons drumming provided him.

“Before, I used to not practice and just wanted to play but I learned that you have to work hard if you want something or to improve,” Weinert said.

Logan Weinert shared his thoughts on Lucas’s talents.

“Lucas and his drumming will go as far and as wide as he wants to go. He’s a very hard worker and finds a lot of joy in it,” Logan Weinert said.

Another field that inspired many habits for Weinert is athletics. Every brother in the Weinert family has played football over the course of their lives, and Lucas is no different. He actually had the chance to play with Landon over this past season. Both brothers shared how memorable playing with each other was to themselves.

“Football this year was a super fun experience getting to play with my brother and my friends. My brother and I are pretty close, and I loved being able to play football with him for a year,” he said.

“Playing with [Lucas] was a blessing. I appreciated the fact that he would listen to the advice that I gave him to improve his playing. That to me shows him growing as a person and I am proud of him for that,” Landon Weinert said.

All three brothers in the household share an important relationship with each other. Logan is the eldest, having graduated RHS in 2020. He spoke upon his relationship with Lucas and how he wishes to guide him through life.

“I see myself as a role model to Lucas in many ways. As an older brother he looks up to me even when I don’t think he is watching. I help him the most by giving him advice and helping him succeed better in areas I struggled in when I was his age,” he said.

As the brother in the middle, Landon shares deep connections with older brother Logan and younger brother Lucas. He shared that he and Logan would often go fishing together, and just find themselves hanging out. On the other hand, he would share stories and events with Lucas. Landon described his relationship with brother Lucas.

“Lucas and I have a love-hate relationship from time to time, but for the most part we get along pretty well. No matter how frustrated he can get me, he always is able to make me laugh it off somehow,” Landon Weinert said.

Landon also discussed how music brought the two of them together. He shared that he enjoyed playing guitar, but his enjoyment was nowhere near Lucas. Landon joked about how much Lucas loves drumming.

“Lucas has played drums for most of his life, and you can tell he is passionate about it from his 10:30pm practice sessions on weeknights when everyone else in the house is trying to sleep,” he said.

If one thing is for certain, it is that Lucas Weinert is a drummer and enjoys every second of it. What started as a childhood gimmick evolved into a serious hobby. Weinert concluded with what his plans are in life and how drumming can factor into them.

“As of right now drumming is just a fun hobby that I love to do, but I think that later in life if I continue to play and keep practicing that anything could happen,” Weinert said.
