Students renovate cabin
In the spring of 2016 the Umina family purchased a piece of land in Bath, Ohio. They were planning on building their new home on the property, towards the back there was a fairly small, run down cabin. This is where the youngest of the Umina family, Revere High School junior Anthony Umina, and all of his friends spend their days. One can find them either fixing up or hiking through the surrounding wooded area, complete with a creek and a waterfall. Once the group of boys started to work on the cabin, they could not stop. Eventually the old, run-down cabin turned into the new hang out spot for not only Anthony but also his older sister Madison and all of their friends.
Umina mentioned how he first acquired an interest in renovating the cabin.
“Early 2016, my family was in the process of moving, and my dad bought the cabin as a place to build our next house. My dad always planned on keeping the cabin, as a place for me, my sister, and our friends to hang out at, and built our new house right around there. Knowing this encouraged my friends and I to try to restore the cabin and make it a place for people to hang out in,” Umina said.
After Umina and all of his friends discovered and became interested in fixing up the cabin in the late spring and the summer, they would meet up often to strive to reach their goals of having a fun place to hang out. Originally the cabin only had a couple of tables and a couple of chairs. Revere High School junior Jacob Peterson was Anthony’s right hand man while making the renovations made to the cabin.
“After renovations were made the cabin had “cornhole, darts, fishing rods, a trampoline, a tire swing that swings over the creek and even a basketball hoop,” Peterson said.
Umina took it upon himself to furnish and add electricity. That was when it became an official hang out spot.
“The work itself consisted of a lot of cleaning for the most part. We bought a few couches from the Salvation Army and I managed to get a generator and got a strand of lights to run electricity through,” Umina said.
Alongside Anthony and Peterson was a fellow Revere High School junior, Jack Schloss. Schloss voiced that, his favorite part of the renovations was the satisfaction he felt when the group finished.
“My favorite part of being a part of the group that fixed up the cabin is having the satisfaction that we did something great that turned into a fun place to hang out with my friends,” Schloss said.
The goal of the group was to turn the old one-thousand square foot cabin into a fun place for many people to hang out. They feel they have reached their goal.
Anthony is happy about the progress of the cabin, but knows that work is still left to do.
“Although the cabin has reached our goals, there is no stopping in making improvements to and old place like that,” Umina said.
Now that school has started, the group of friends get to frequent the cabin less often than they could over the summer. Anthony will go check up on it several times a week. No matter what, the group of friends will still try to meet up at the cabin to hang out, clean up, grill some food, and have a bonfire on the weekends.
