Life Without Limbs speaker visits RHS
Nick Vujicic, a three foot three inch man, commands the attention of a group of over two-thousand people. As his eyes scan the crowd, he notices a young boy resting on his father’s shoulders. He calls the young boy on the stage with him and has his father place him on the same platform as Vujicic. The boy has no limbs and a small flipper for a foot, yet as he gazes up at Vujicic, he sees someone just like him. His big brown eyes fill with delight as Vujicic approaches him and they touch their miniscule feet together. There is not a dry eye in the crowd as they watch this spectacle.
Nick Vujicic is an Australian-born motivational speaker. He was born with tetra-amelia syndrome, a rare birth disorder that stopped his limbs from developing. He is the founder of Life Without Limbs, a foundation that tours the world speaking to corporate audiences, congregations and schools about the importance of triumphing over obstacles that seem insurmountable.
Gary Godbey, the director of Life Without Limbs discussed the mission statement of Vujicic’s organization Life Without Limbs.
“Vujicic strongly believes that he can use a life without limbs to show the world how to live a life without limits,” Godbey said.
Vujicic discussed the principles behind his organization, Life Without Limbs.
“Life Without Limbs is a non-profit, faith-based charity located in Westlake, California. It also functions as a way that I can talk about my faith. It shows how I transformed my life from a life without limbs, to a life without limits,” Vujicic said.
Vujicic touched upon what prompted him to start the foundation at a relatively young age.
“For me it is all about hope. When I traveled the world at age nineteen and I saw orphanages and pain, I felt that I could not remain the same,” Vujicic said.
Revere High School principal Phil King talked about how he first heard about Vujicic and his program.
“I first heard Vujicic speak at a National Youth Gathering. I went to a workshop in January and met Godbey. He discussed that Vujicic would be in Ohio and I jumped on the opportunity to have [him] become a speaker at Revere,” King said.
King explained the process he had to complete to have Vujicic speak at Revere.
“I had to contact Godbey who was the lead for Vujicic’s program. We [Revere] wanted to host the program so a couple parents and I who were instrumental in setting up this presentation contacted Godbey and made all the necessary arrangements,” King said.
Matthew Montgomery, the superintendent of the Revere Local School District, discussed the procedure for other schools to tune into Vujicic’s presentation via the live-stream setup by Life Without Limbs.
“We will be airing a web based live stream. Nick’s organization is bringing all of the equipment so we are not involved in the setup. Any school with the correct address in the state of Ohio can sign in to view the live stream,” Montgomery said.
Godbey discussed the ideas that Vujicic focuses on when he is working with high school age students.
“[Vujicic talks about] being kind, representing yourself, helping others and using these ideas to prevent bullying,” Godbey said.
Vujicic touched upon what inspires him as he tours the world and spreads his message.
“My inspiration is really my wife, Kanae Vujicic. We have been married for three and a half years and we have two boys, ages two years and two months [respectively], and you do not need any more inspiration than that,” Vujicic said.
King discussed what he hopes to have students gain by attending the assembly.
“I would like the students to trust each other, treat others with dignity, and learn that there are certain things that they should and should not do. I would like them to connect these morals with our 3 Rules of Living: Do your very best, do what is right and help others,” King said.
King expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to have Vujicic as a guest speaker at Revere.
“He is truly very inspirational. I am very thankful to have him, as students really listen to him, and we are very pleased to have this opportunity to host Nick [at Revere],” King said.
Vujicic’s speech was on October 8 in the Revere High School auditorium. The speech was livestreamed to other schools throughout the state. Vujicic also spoke at the Wolstein Center in Cleveland.
