Homecoming embraces Secret Garden theme
Revere High School’s Student Council celebrated Homecoming at the RHS Varsity football game against Wadsworth, showcasing a Secret Garden theme at the Homecoming Dance by using props with mystical aesthetics.
The members of RHS Student Council began planning this year’s Homecoming during the last meeting of the previous school year, voting to decide upon the final theme as a whole. A group of Student Council members later travelled to the Northcoast Theater Company, a giant warehouse with props for events such as musicals, dances, weddings and other occasions. The students then chose decorations, created posters and other advertisements, filled out necessary paperwork, sold tickets, hired entertainment and kept track of the event’s total cost. They selected decor that reflected the chosen theme in the best way possible. The group had about twenty people setting up decorations for six hours on the day of Homecoming. Student Council cleaned up the entire operation the next day.
Student Council president and RHS Senior Miranda Koewler clarified the targeted theme of Homecoming, including the atmosphere that Student Council intended to create.
“It’s more mystical because we have all of these types of plants. There will be all of this lighting, and there is a lot of greenery. We are going to try to get some flowers,” Koewler said.
Student Council vice president and RHS Senior Julie Garcia explained the reasons that Student Council used Northcoast Theatrical Company to purchase props.
“We go there because it is relatively close and they pretty much have anything that you could ever want. [One] would keep going farther back and they would have more stuff. They always have something that fits our theme,” Garcia said.
RHS Family/Consumer Science Teacher Kathleen Shisler, co-adviser of Student Council with RHS guidance counselor Jenny Kirchner, explained that Student Council splits into groups to meet the various needs of Homecoming.
“We put ourselves into different groups . . . We have someone who does the painting, someone who does the floor plan, decorations or budget. We have all different kinds of committees,” Shisler said.
RHS Senior Tom Klein, Student Council’s Public Relations officer, voiced that the advertisement and posters for Homecoming rely on the theme of the occasion. Klein noted that the best way to advertise the dance is through word-of-mouth.
Koewler explained that the DJ hosting Homecoming this year worked for Beach Boyz Entertainment, a different company than last year’s dance. She also explained that the photo booth returned this year as well via the new DJ.
In preparation for Homecoming, Student Council held an assembly on October 6 to announce the Homecoming Court. The Freshman court consisted of Tyler Ebert and Cassidy Kohmann; the Sophomore court consisted of Constantine Papas and Allisar Charara; the Junior court consisted of Benjamin Berry and Chloe Stile; the senior court consisted of female representatives Alison Baumgardner, Kaitlyn Daubenmire, Megan Gilroy, Hannah Likar, Brady Marks and Lauren Teter as well as male representatives Chase Costanzo, Sahan Kiridena, Zeckary Lehman, Jason Londrico, Joseph Magoline and Michael Miller.
Student Council revealed the court at the RHS Homecoming football game against Wadsworth. Revere 2013 Homecoming King and Revere graduate Joel Gerberich and 2013 Homecoming court member and Revere graduate Marissa Harbath crowned Kiridena and Baumgardner as Revere 2014 Homecoming King and Queen. The Revere High School football team faced Wadsworth High School, losing with a score of 35-21. The Secret Garden Homecoming Dance occurred on October, selling over 550 tickets for the Homecoming Dance.
