The men’s lacrosse season at Revere High School (RHS) is set to kickoff next month, with players eager to build on last year’s performance under the leadership of their upperclassmen.
After a tough second-round exit to the Kenston Bombers in last year’s playoffs, the RHS men’s lacrosse team is focused on bouncing back stronger this season. Returning core players are determined to build on the lessons learned from last year’s playoff run, where they showed resilience but ultimately fell short in a 11-10 loss. Leading the charge this year are senior Greyson Fairhurst, senior Nate Smith, and junior Jack Simpson all of whom bring valuable experience and leadership to the squad.
Fairhurst, who plays defense and serves as a captain for the team, is eager to help mentor the younger players.
“The dynamic is looking very flexible and young… We have a very young team this year with a lot of talent and I look forward to mentoring them,” he said.
Last season, Fairhurst was recognized as the Suburban League Defensive Most Valuable Player and earned a first-team All-Suburban League selection, a second-year varsity award, and an academic award. Fairhurst’s commitment to helping other players grow while developing his own play has contributed to his previous season recognitions. He tore his ACL last season, but is coming back this season ready to lead the team. Fairhurst shares a look at what the team has been up to as they get ready for the season to start.
“We’ve had a team dinner at Whitey’s and a few meetings and practices so far… we are gearing up towards our first few scrimmages,” Fairhurst said.
As the season is about to start, the team works on and off the field building relationships.
“I believe I impact my team by being a good captain and communicating clearly to other players,” Fairhurst said.
The team has found a stable leader in Fairhurst. His continued leadership both on and off the field will be crucial in guiding the team through the season. Smith, another captain, will play his final year with Fairhurst after playing together for over seven years.
“I enjoy being back with the team and having fun with them… I will try to be encouraging and not overly strict,” Smith said.
Leadership from Smith and Fairhurst looks to guide the team to success. Simpson, who plays defense and long-stick midfield, shares similar thoughts on the team.
“It’s a young team and a smaller team… But I think it’s looking good— a lot of these guys have played together before, so there’s good chemistry,” Simpson said.
Despite being a young team, a good chemistry will look to support the team. Simpson finds it easier to take things seriously as a leader of the team, and realizes the benefit of putting the team over himself at times.
“I want to play for the team, and more specifically to win as a team,” Simpson said.
Although Simpson has multiple personal awards such as Honorable mention in the district last year and Rookie of the Year his freshman year, Simpson finds much more value in team successes.
The team is gearing up for the 2024-25 season, led by experienced captains Fairhurst and Smith. With a young but talented roster, the team’s leaders look to build chemistry and mentor underclassmen. Players urge their peers to support the team at their season debut on March 18th against Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy (CVCA).
