Students create car meet

To many, a car show captures the essence of the automobile world: a haven of bright colors, shiny wheels, clean interiors and loud engine revs. For the aspiring high school-aged car enthusiast, the opportunity to own a car of such caliber falls beyond their reach. Fortunately, a group of Revere students sharing these similar interests created their own haven of cars, resulting in a flourishing community filled with drivers coming together to share their passions.

Revere sophomore Chase McIntyre, sophomore Devin Zeller, and senior Chase Hiltebrant formed the car meet Mart Meet over the summer as a way for drivers with an interest in cars to meet with like-minded individuals and socialize over their passions and aspirations. Hiltebrant described the creation of this car meet.

“It was originally started as just something to do [on] a Friday to . . . get into the weekend as a release. . . . A lot of kids have passions for cars, so I thought this was a great way to bring some of the community together. . . . It is a great social event as well. People will come [to Mart Meet], and they will socialize, and it does not matter what car you bring. If you are eligible to drive, and you have a valid driver’s license, then you are allowed to come with any car,” Hiltebrant said.

The founders created the name Mart Meet after the original starting place of the first car meet, which they held at the Discount Drug Mart in Copley on Medina Line Road. Zeller describes one of the reasons the founders held Mart Meet at Discount Drug Mart.

“We were out taking pictures with our cars, and we needed to find a place with lights because it was about 11:00 . . . and [Discount Drug Mart] was the closest place with lights on,” Zeller said.

Mart Meet starts at 10:30 at night and stays in the parking lot of Discount Drug Mart until 11:30. Hiltebrant noted the preparations for the meet.

“For the most part [Discount] Drug Mart is our standard place. . . . We are in Montrose quite a bit too, so when it becomes later at night . . . we will send a notification out . . .  to our followers if we are changing times or places. Some of the other places . . . would be the Olive Garden parking lot, or really any other parking lot near Olive Garden or Montose that is available. We always talk to the owner before holding [Mart Meet] there,” Hiltebrant said.

From its beginning in late August, Mart Meet has increased in size. Hiltebrant noted the size of the meets.

“Our first turnout was ten to fifteen people, and it grew from that. The most we have ever had was forty-seven people and that [includes] forty-plus cars . . . so we filled up [almost] the whole parking lot,” Hiltebrant said.

During Mart Meet, participants will converse over a variety of topics related to cars, comparing each other’s cars and holding contests for who has the better speaker system or louder engine. McIntyre expressed the opportunity for people interested in cars to attend.

“Everyone is welcome. You just have to show up. We do not care what your car looks like; we just care that you are interested in cars and [that] you want to grow our car scene,” McIntyre said.

In order to spread the news about the new car meet, the founders of Mart Meet decided to use social media applications such as Twitter, Instagram and Snapchat as a way to speak directly to their followers on dates for meet-ups. Hiltebrant described the potential for Mart Meet to increase in size over time.

“It is a newly found thing. . . . If we can get our name out more, and when it really gets bigger, when more people start finding out about this they are [going to] find the locations great. Route 18 [is] very close to a lot of things right outside of Montrose,” Hiltebrant said.

Throughout the duration of Mart Meet’s existence, a variety of cars have attended the meet-up. Cars such as Ford Mustangs, BMWs and all-track Mazda Miatas have made appearances. Zeller noted the difference between Mart Meet and other local car shows.

“Most [car shows] are higher-end cars. This is more just high school kids hanging out. We are proud of what we have. We know our cars are not anything special. . . . We just use what we have,” Zeller said.

A world of car culture, aspiring car enthusiasts and passions for cars define the activities and conversations of Mart Meet on Friday nights. For those interested in the opportunity to take part in socialization and enjoyable experience, a simple cruise to Discount Drug Mart will find one in a world of loud engines and bass-boosted stereo systems after 10:30 p.m.
