In “Lights Up,” Styles gains the strength to speak out about the LGBTQ+ in an emotional ballad of lyrics telling the person that it is ok to be who you are, and to never be ashamed to be true to yourself. He wrote this song in dedication to the ones who are afraid to identify with their sexuality. It is defined as an anthem to help them gain courage and bravery. Personally, the first time I listened to this album, I truly enjoyed it. The amount of truth that he stains into his work is astounding. With beautiful melodies and harmonies combined with Styles’ lyrics, the music is moving to the heart and mind.
Styles produces his truth to the listeners. While some musicians do not write their own music, all the songs on Styles’ albums are written by him and worked on by him. He puts his work and hours into all of his music and it clearly gives him a canvas to work with. He opens himself about his true love, his heartbreaks and his sexuality. He explores sensitive topics and delivers them with beauty.
