Students provide input for student section improvment

Revere High School is revamping its student section so that the student sections at sporting events will have more school spirit and better sportsmanship.

Revere High School Principal Phil King is trying to help bring more spirit to all sporting events while keeping the atmosphere appropriate. King asked senior student section leaders Zane VanFossen and Emily Brock, to share with him who the leaders of the student section are, he then invited the students he was told about to come to a meeting with him in the morning before class started, so they could discuss what needed to be improved on in the student section. King shared what he discussed in his meeting with the students.

“We discussed concerns about students being engaged in the student section, and how we could make it a better experience for all the students. In addition, we discussed the concerns I had as a school principal of keeping cheers positive and supporting our student-athletes,” King said.

King focused on what should be done to help improve the student section and get students more involved in the chants. King shared which changes the group decided to make.

“The student section is allowed to cheer loudly, create themes for each game, [and] communicate the themes at school and through Twitter. In addition, we added components like finding school flags to use, using megaphones to communicate [with the] student section, and using the principal’s influence to get the students engaged at the beginning of the games,” King said.

King also shared what he thinks about the student section since they have begun improving it.

“I am proud of the students that have given their input and the last two football games have seen a vast improvement of students cheering and we appear more organized,” King said.

Brock shared what she thinks about the student section changes and what it will do for the student section.

“I’m glad Mr. King called some students in to talk about the student section. I think it will make the student section more fun [and will] make the student section bigger and better than ever before,” Brock said.

Junior Audric Wertz was also a student who was selected by King to give ideas about the student section and how to enhance it. Wertz shared how King handled and organized the meeting and the rules that King wanted to put into place.

“All his thoughts were pretty reasonable and we all agreed with basically everything he was trying to do. He was also very good about hearing everyone else’s ideas too,” Wertz said.

Revere played its final home football game of the season on Friday, October 28.
